11 Fun Things to Do When You’re Down in a Funk or Stressed Out
It happens to all of us, there’s no denying it. There are those times in your life when you just can’t seem to muster up the energy to get yourself to do anything productive. Maybe it’s because you’ve been facing some problems at work, your love life is the shits, or you’re finding it hard to feel inspired – maybe all of the above or maybe or you just don’t feel like doing LIFE.
Nevertheless, a funk is a funk, and you need to get yourself out of it! And what better way than to do something fun? Here are some fun things you can do to get yourself hyped up when you’re down in a funk or stressed out:
1. Take a Road Trip
A road trip is one of the best ways to get your mood lifted. You’ll get to enjoy some beautiful scenery, explore new places you’ve never been to, talk to new people, make friends, and become more aware of the world around you. This will help you realize that whatever is bothering you is just a small part of the world.
2. Friends Night In
Sometimes, no matter how hard you try, you just don’t feel like leaving the sanctity of your home. But staying in the same place feeling the same things can make your mood even worse. So, call up your friends and ask them to come over. Share all your deepest thoughts with them or pop a movie in, grab some popcorn and don’t talk at all. Regardless, you’ll feel a lot better having your friends around you.
3. Take Up a Hobby
Did you use to be a musician back in high school, or maybe you like to sew but haven’t had the time to do so lately. A good way to come out of feeling dull is to take up a hobby – be it something that you’re familiar with or something completely new. The motivation to do something that interests you should come easier than whatever has you down, and once you actually do it, the feeling of accomplishment should get you over the edge. Or at least start to.
4. Try Something New
You know that thing that you’ve always been wanting to try? It’s always in the back of your mind, but you keep pushing it away? Maybe it’s trying out that new restaurant, learning to play the guitar – or taking a road trip – this is the time to do it! The feeling of trying something new is exciting and is surely a mood booster.
5. Have a Good Cry
Crying is fun? Well, when you feel like there are a hundred emotions fighting to burst out of your chest but you just don’t know how to express them – yeah, it is! Sometimes, a good cry is the perfect medicine for a sour mood. We’re talking a good old bawling, snot-dripping cry sess. Pop in a sad movie and let it drip!
6. Laugh Out Loud
Ever heard the phrase “laughter is the best medicine”? Well, it’s true! Some research even indicates that the act of laughing, even if you don’t feel like it, can elevate your mood. So, the next time you’re in a funk, watch a funny movie, TV show, or even a few clips online. Force yourself to laugh out loud. It might seem silly at first, but you might just end up laughing for real.
7. Go to the Animal Shelter
Going down to the local pet shelter, especially if you love animals, can be one of the best things you can do to reduce stress. Spending time with these innocent beings is sure to lift your mood. Who knows, you might even come home with your very own stress-busting companion for all your future trips down the funk lane. At the least, you’ll have gotten a lot of cuddles and doggy kisses – and that’s pretty amazing too.
If you’re feeling unsatisfied with the status of your life, one of the best ways to get rid of it is to remind yourself of those that are less fortunate. Volunteer at a local homeless shelter or soup kitchen, where you’ll get to see firsthand some such people. This way, you’ll be doing something good while also helping yourself.
9. Help Someone Else
Speaking of doing something for someone else, did you know that making someone else happy is a surefire way to make yourself happy? Helping someone else will make you feel useful and valuable, and that’s a euphoric feeling if there ever was one!
10. Bring Your Inner Kid Out
If we’re being honest, we’re all just kids at heart parading around in fancy suits and adult bodies. A great way to lift your spirits out is to let your inner kid out. Play some games, blow bubbles, jump on the bed, eat sugary food, color, watch cartoons – anything you want to do that would seem “childish”, do it!
We can get all science-y and explain how exercise reduces cortisol and increases endorphins in your body, but the simple matter of fact that our bodies are designed to naturally feel better when we exercise. Not only will you be able to get your mind off of whatever has you down, all these good hormones aren’t a bad thing either!
Note: Depression is something serious. That is not what we’re talking about here. Feeling down once in a while because of something in your life at that moment is curable by doing fun things. Depression is something you need to get help for. Please consult a doctor, talk to your friends and family, and take care of yourself. A lot of people love and care about you, you should too!
