It is based on the play In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue and directed and written by Barry Jenkins. The entire movie is filmed in Miami, Florida, and stars Trevante Rhodes, André Holland, Janelle Monáe, Ashton Sanders, Jharrel Jerome, Naomie Harris, and Mahershala Ali.

Moonlight received 8 Oscar nominations for the 89th Academy Awards including Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Director and Best Picture. It won Best Motion Picture – Drama at the 74th Golden Globe Awards.

Manchester by the Sea

Manchester by the Sea was a strong film in 2016 with strong cast including Casey Affleck, Michelle Williams, Kyle Chandler and Lucas Hedges, and has the chance to stand as the Best Motion Picture at the 89th Academy Awards. The movie is directed and written by Kenneth Lonergan with interesting storyline of a man who looks after his teenage nephew, whose father has died.

The film has earned many times of the making budget, which was $8.5 million. Released on December 16 for global market after initial limited release, Manchester by the Sea has until now grossed $56 million worldwide.

Fences

The American family drama film Fences is perfectly equipped with a touching story about human desires as well as human dreams. Written by August Wilson and directed by Denzel Washington, the movie is believed by most of the experts to be having a chance to take home an Oscar. It stars Washington, Viola Davis, Stephen Henderson, Jovan Adepo, Russell Hornsby, Mykelti Williamson and Saniyya Sidney.

The American biographical drama film of 2016 features Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monáe, Kevin Costner, Kirsten Dunst, Jim Parsons, Glen Powell and Mahershala Ali. Based on non-fiction book of Hidden Figures, the movie is written by Melfi and Allison Schroeder and directed by Theodore Melfi.

Hidden Figures is a story of three African-American women who worked for NASA and were highly honest to their duties. It was nominated by several awards including Golden Globes. It won Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

Hell or High Water

Premiered at the Un Certain Regard section of the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, the film Hell or High Water is written by Taylor Sheridan and directed by David Mackenzle.

The American Film Institute selected Hell or High Water as one of the top ten movies of 2016. Having a good chance of winning the Oscar, the movie was also nominated for the Golden Globe Awards.
